Atmel Announces CAP Customizable Microcontrollers
By BDTI, 7/18/2007
atmel_thumb.jpgIn June Atmel announced the Customizable Atmel Processor (CAP), a family of customizable microcontrollers, and two initial devices. Customization in the CAP is achieved via a gate array block in which users can implement functions ranging from processor cores and peripherals to algorithm accelerators. (More)

OMAP3 to Ship with Hand Crafted Cortex-A8 ARM Core
By BDTI, 6/27/2006

TI_graphic_thumbnail.gif In May, Texas Instruments disclosed its first implementation of the ARM Cortex-A8 processor. Typically, ARM cores are implemented using logic synthesis exclusively. For the Cortex-A8, TI instead took the very labor-intensive path of hand crafting many parts of the implementation to squeeze more performance and energy efficiency out of the core. TIs Cortex-A8 implementation will first be used in the companys OMAP3 family of chips.

Startup Connex Introduces Architecture for HD Video
By BDTI, 6/27/2006
Connex_graphic_thumbnail.gifIn May, fabless semiconductor startup Connex announced its CA1024 processor, which is based on the ConnexArray vector architecture. After receiving initial funding from In-Q-Tel, a not-for-profit venture group established by the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency, Connex first applied the ConnexArray architecture to database search applications. With the CA1024 Connex sets its sights on high definition video. (More)

Case Study: Obtaining the Best Benchmark Results with the Least Engineering Effort
By BDTI, 6/27/2006
Typically, processor vendors use their in-house engineering resources to optimize benchmark implementations. This can yield good benchmark results, particularly when the benchmarks are implemented by engineers with intimate knowledge of a processors architecture and sufficient time to do a thorough job. In some cases, though, the processor vendor may prefer to outsource benchmark implementation work. In such situations, vendors often turn to BDTI for benchmark implementation services. (More)

Jeff Bier's Impulse Response – FPGAs as Embedded Processors
By Jeff Bier, 6/27/2006
The next time you’re choosing an embedded processor, you should consider choosing an FPGA. This was the take-home message from FPGA vendors at the Embedded Systems Conference Silicon Valley in April—and in my opinion, it’s a message with merit. (More)
